The Applied Sciences Laboratory (ASL) is a contract research organization located in Spokane, Wash. Our client/partners are private corporations and agencies of the federal government.
ASL was formed in 2004 as the applied-research arm of WSU’s Institute for Shock Physics (ISP). Using multi-disciplinary teams of scientists, we perform a broad range of research in the physical sciences.
Our aim is the development of practical applications, many having commercial potential.
Multi-disciplinary approach
Like ISP, we use a multi-disciplinary approach involving researchers from several disciplines, including:
• Physics
• Chemistry
• Engineering
• Computer science
Their work is collaborative and engages four labs located on the Riverpoint campus in Spokane’s University District. |
Insight to Innovation
We began to mature at the atomic level just 60 years ago. An eye-blink in the history of human understanding. Now we are on the threshold of nearly unimaginable change.
• Based on fundamental research conducted at the Institute for Shock Physics, ASL researchers are working on the next generation of batteries, solar panels, and energy-storage devices.
• Thanks to modern medical implants – from pacemakers to artificial knees – millions enjoy renewed quality of life. We imagine fatigue-resistant replacements, made of advanced materials designed by man from nature’s template, which never wear out or submit to corrosion.
We are finding new ways to protect our military by improving the quality of its equipment. Today’s ceramic armor is strong, but not durable, often shattering on first impact. Advanced new materials will extend their useful lifespan |
