Understanding materials at the microscopic level
The testing and characterization of novel or advanced materials is a key component of ASL's multidisciplinary research. In keeping with our entrepreneurial mission, these capabilities are available to outside researchers.
The lab’s equipment and tools can be used to test and characterize most materials, including metals, polymers, ceramics and composites.
The process is designed to:
- Improve our fundamental understanding of materials, specifically the relationships between their properties at the microscopic level
- Allow characterization and measurement at the microstructure level of certain physical properties, such as elastic constants
ASL’s testing and characterization capabilities also can be used for failure analysis and, within limits, for quality control and assurance.
